Hear No Evil, See No Evil....
We love us some Halloween in our house.
I have friends who don't celebrate Halloween because it goes against their religion. Heck, at our church, they mentioned something about "not loving" Halloween. I've read a lot about the background of Halloween and I do understand why some people choose not to celebrate it. I don't think they are ridiculous. I even get where they are coming from.

In fact, I've changed things up a bit in our house. While I still granted L his request of a scary-faced jack-o-lantern, I threw out our skulls on stakes and tombstones that used to decorate our front yard. While I don't begrudge the house on our street that is decked out in scary trimmings, I also steer away from garnishings representing evil or the dead. (Well, besides B's very scary mask. But it went with the theme, yo.)
But for us? Halloween is a happy, special time. It's a time of family. L's grandpa came over last night and his presence on our trek around the neighborhood made it even more special. Seeing PawPaw Rob, dressed in his flying monkey costume no less, interacting with my boys, made L even more excited about the holiday.
I saw so many families with adults in costumes last night and everyone came together to celebrate. Strangers were making small talk on the sidewalks, complimenting one another. Laughter rang out in the dark. The energy was positive...not evil, not creepy.
I'll be honest. I don't look forward to the day that L tells me he wants to be a zombie or even a ninja for Halloween. I'll make my decisions about that when it happens. (edited to add...I do not judge mommas of zombie and ninja'd-costumed littles. I'll just be sad when my baybee wants to be scarified.) For now, I'll revel in the cuteness of my Batman and Robin. PawPaw Rob asked L if he needed him to carry his candy bag and L retorted, "No way. I'm Batman. I can handle anything!"
I've seen good come from negativity countless times. An illness leads to a renewed relationship with God. A tragedy brings a family together. Someone becomes very thankful for an unanswered prayer weeks or even years after the fact. To me, Halloween is the same way. I personally am not a believer in the roots of Halloween but I've come to find that what those roots morphed into is a time of togetherness, bringing memories for L and G that I suspect they'll remember with fondness.
Plus, this morning, L woke up and said, "I am so glad I got to trick-or-treat and traded my candy for those toys. I want to say thank you to God."
Leave it to a four-year-old to prove that Halloween and God are not mutually exclusive.
Namaste.

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na....BATMAN!
Just a sneak peek...

I'll be back soon with more shots (of better quality) of our trick-or-treating experience (with B making a special appearance and hopefully G tolerating his mask) and some cute pumpkin-patching from this weekend.
Namaste and Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!
I present....Bam-Bam and Pebbles.

Yeah....we were much more excited about their costumes than they were. But you know, whatever.
Many more pictures to come! Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend and enjoyed inspecting your kiddos' candy. I know I did.
